Lightning McQueen, voiced by Owen Wilson, is the animated star of Disney’s Cars (2006). The first in a series of 3 films, Cars is about a rookie race car who hits a detour on his way to a career defining race and strands himself in the forgotten town of Radiator Springs. It is there that he discovers what truly matters in life thanks to some new friends and tough lessons.

Cars and its sequels Cars 2 (2011) and Cars 3 (2017) were the inspiration behind Chris’ vehicle, which he’s showcased in multiple viral social media posts. Over time, this attention earned him the title of the largest Lightning McQueen themed account in the world.

It also landed him in some legal hot water. In early April, Chris received a letter from Disney and took to TikTok to share the news. The lawsuit announcement reached more than 1.2 million followers and kicked off a several months long legal battle.

The minute long video was viewed more than 17 million times and earned more than 23,000 comments, informing viewers of his intent to lawyer up.

In the next update, Chris quipped about small changes pitched by commenters that would differentiate his car from Lightning McQueen’s likeness, potentially allowing him to avoid legal trouble. Ideas like changing the numbers on the door, or alternatively naming the car “Thunder McKing” were just two of the proposed solutions.

Chris continued to post content as usual for months without mentioning the lawsuit before finally posting another update in early June.

Again, he joked about the predicament he found himself in by “upsetting the mouse.”

The video, captioned “disney lawyers are no joke,” opens with a knelt Chris with a Disney merchandise bag over his head, acting out a scene in which he’s forced to read the words “the car behind me is not actually Lightning McQueen.”

Still, Chris pressed on, posting Lightning McQueen content through the end of July when he shared the “good news and bad news” that he and Disney had finally reached a legal settlement.

Ultimately, Disney would not allow Chris to continue to make content with his Subaru BRZ replica as it was just too identical to the character. They did, however, come to a compromise. Disney signed off on Chris using a different model car for his famed channels, prompting a new Lightning McQueen build using a Corvette.

In true Chris fashion, he posted one final update in which he read a satirical version of the legal documents sent to him by Disney, citing that they were most upset that he “created the world’s first flawless replica.”

Tim Allen is Buzz Lightyear, the intergalactic space ranger of Star Command that made his official landing in Toy Story (1995), reprising his role for the next twenty years until Pixar ended the franchise with Toy Story 4 (2019).

When news broke that Avengers (2012) star Chris Evans would be taking the Buzz Lightyear mantle from Tim Allen in Pixar’s Lightyear (2022), fans were beside themselves.

Now, with Lightyear in theaters dropping in box office sales (currently grossing only $152 million worldwide), and receiving landmark backlash due to a same-sex scene kissing scene in the film sparking online cancelations, Tim Allen has finally addressed his silence on the Toy Story spinoff:

The 89’er Theater in Kingfisher, Oklahoma, posted a sign last week about the premiere of Pixar’s newest film, Lightyear, directed by Angus MacLane.

Lightyear tells the story of Buzz Lightyear (Chris Evans), the astronaut that inspired Andy’s favorite toy, Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), in Toy Story (1995).

The film has garnered public attention after a same-sex kiss was removed and re-added to the film amid conflict between The Walt Disney Company and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for his “Don’t Say Gay” law.

The movie theater’s sign reads:

WARNING

Attention Parents: The management of this theatre discovered after booking “Lightyear” that there is a same-sex kissing scene within the first 30 minutes of the Pixar movie. 

We will do all that we can to fast-forward through that scene, but it might not be exact.

We apologize for any inconvenience this late discovery of this scene causes. 

The owner told ABC KOCO News 5 that the theater removed the sign and never fast-forwarded through the same-sex kiss in Lightyear. 

Chris Evans, Lightyear’s star, expressed frustration that the kiss between two women was controversial, saying it should be “the norm.”

Evans later called homophobic critics of Lightyear “idiots” who will “die off like dinosaurs.”

Lightyear is the latest victim of “review bombing,” a new craze in which a movie that audiences and the general public deem “controversial” or “political” receives a drastic amount of one-star ratings.

The brand new series on Disney+, Ms. Marvel, was the previous review bombed victim from Disney after viewers gave the show a one-star rating, reportedly due to the main character’s Muslim faith and more.

Now, Pixar finds itself in the review bombed hole with its Toy Story (1995) spinoff after a scene of two women sharing a kiss is featured in the final film, resulting in the new Disney movie being banned in 14 countries, including Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Fans have now noticed that Lightyear has been labeled as “Severe” on IMDb’s Parents Guide:

At the time of writing, Lightyear sits at a 5.3/10 IMDb rating, with 42.7% of over 19,000 users’ ratings listing the movie as a one-star, leading to over 300 users stating that there’s “severe” sex and nudity present in the film.

In contrast, Martin Scorsese’s XXX The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) film has been labeled “Severe” on IMDb’s Sex & Nudity content rating. Lightyear doesn’t come close to anything of any sort near The Wolf of Wall Street and shouldn’t be deemed the same for adult content.

Nearly 8,000 of the total reviews list Lightyear as only being worthy of one-star. The second most review rating falls on five stars, with only 2,700 users reviewing the new movie this high.

Nonetheless, Pixar’s latest feature film is demolishing the box office and breaking animated movie records.

While not every Pixar fan is thrilled to see the new movie, Lightyear is proving to be one of the most profitable hits to come out of Emeryville, California, in a long while.

Lightyear is the first Pixar film to release in theaters since the outbreak of COVID-19, but moviegoers aren’t flocking to this Toy Story spinoff. Lightyear‘s worldwide opening gross, unfortunately, doesn’t come close to the previous $130 million earned by Frozen II (2019) and the landmark $180 million earned during The Incredibles 2 worldwide opening weekend.

Coming nearly $20 million (grossing only $51 million at domestic theaters) under the reported $70 million that Pixar’s Lightyear was expected to earn during its domestic opening weekend, it’s clear that this new animated feature is going to have a fight for its life as new movies continue to trump the box office.

Pixar Animation Studios and The Walt Disney Company have been swallowed by online hate, backlash, and controversies surrounding their newest film, Lightyear, the latest addition to the Toy Story franchise starring Chris Evans (Avengers: Endgame).

With Pixar pouring their heart and soul to keep intact a scene with a same-sex couple sharing a kiss on screen, the internet exploded with social media attacks and civil wars regarding the matter.

As a result of Disney reinstating the scene, the Pixar movie has been banned in over 10 Middle Eastern countries, including Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Lightyear‘s current IMDb rating sits at 4.1/10, officially making it the worst-rated Pixar movie to date.

With over 2,100 1-star ratings (at the time of writing), Pixar’s Lightyear has unfortunately plummeted.

While the motives behind these “review bombs” are unclear, Disney is still working towards getting the movie out to as many audiences as possible.

Pixar fans and critics alike are enjoying the film, scoring the newest animated feature with an 79% on Rotten Tomatoes (at the time of writing).

Nonetheless, politics have swelled the popularity of Lightyear. The family feature has now become a discussion topic that fans are having a hard time grasping.

Disney’s most recent controversies started with Turning Red (2022) by director Domee Shi, starring Rosalie Chiang (Meilin Lee) and Sandrah Oh (Ming Lee) regarding political undertones that viewers reportedly discovered in the film. Nonetheless, Turning Red sits with a 94% Rotten Tomatoes and 7/10 IMDb score.

In the end, Pixar made the choice that they felt was best for the film’s final cut, understanding the consequences that could follow. While Lightyear is being banned in numerous countries, many other viewers can’t wait to see what’s next for the future of Toy Story.

This resulted in a level of specificity that elevated the material and brought additional depth to the characters’ relationships. It has been a privilege to work with such a talented and generous cast.”’

Award-winning composer Michael Giacchino, who’s behind the scores for The Batman (2022) and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), is on board to score Lightyear. Giacchino has a long history with Pixar; he won an Oscar, Golden Globe, and GRAMMY for the original score in Up (2009). His other Pixar credits include The Incredibles (2004), Ratatouille (2007), Cars 2 (2011), Inside Out (2015), Coco (2017), and Incredibles 2 (2018) among others. The Lightyear Original Motion Picture Soundtrack from Walt Disney Records will be available on June 17, 2022.

Some Disney fans won’t be able to watch the most anticipated Pixar movie, Lightyear (2022), in some theaters due to a same-sex kissing scene occurring in the film, resulting in the ban of the Toy Story feature in over 10 Middle Eastern countries.

Following Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), Disney has had yet another feature film banned throughout the Middle East due to the inclusion of same-sex narratives or scenes in their movies.

After Pixar employees wrote an open letter to The Walt Disney Company amidst the “Don’t Say Gay” Florida State Bill controversies that expressed their disappointment in the company’s diversity and representation of its employees, Pixar was reportedly able to add back a cut scene of Hawthorne (Uzo Aduba) and her significant sharing a kiss in the Toy Story (1995) spinoff.

The scene has been added back in, but viewers have “review bombed” Lightyear on IMDb with thousands of 1-star ratings, marking yet another instance where audiences are boycotting Disney over various narratives.

Nonetheless, Pixar Animation Studios is moving forward and releasing new promotional art for the movie, including a controversial drawing of Andy at the theater watching the film with his beloved toys:

The simple, innocent marketing material shows a young Andy enjoying the Star Wars of his universe.

But, fans aren’t taking lightly the fact that this photo breaks Disney canon by having the toys see Buzz before Toy Story, as well as Andy, taking up three seats:

This breaks the timeline of the TS saga, the toys don’t know Buzz when he appears in the first movie, and Andy didn’t have the aliens yet. Pixar should be EMBARRASSED for this oversight. This totally breaks the realistic immersion and ruins every movie for me. SAD!

While some aren’t thinking twice about the photo, fans notice the “oversight” of Disney’s new marketing campaign for Lightyear.

Lightyear currently has an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and the majority of reviews online are loving the Angus MacLane feature film!

Lightyear brings fans the movie that inspired Andy’s favorite toy, Buzz Lightyear, and tells the story of a real-life space ranger of the same name. Chris Evans, best known for being Marvel’s Captain America, takes on Tim Allen’s beloved Buzz as a human version of the toy!

Disney and Pixar have both come under fire for the film, however. After cutting a gay scene from Pixar’s Turning Red (2022), Disney and Pixar chose to cut a same-sex kiss from Lightyear earlier this year.

Fans were furious because it came right after Disney’s fumbled response to Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law. In a significant move, Disney and Pixar ultimately chose to reinstate the kiss and announced that they wouldn’t censor the scene in any international markets.

Earlier this week, Chris Evans spoke out in favor of the kiss, saying it should be “the norm.”

When asked again on Tuesday, Evans spoke candidly to Reuters about his feelings towards critics of LGBTQIA+ representation in Lightyear. 

“The real truth is those people are idiots,” Evans said. “Every time there’s been social advancement as we wake up, the American story, the human story, is one of constant social awakening and growth, and that’s what makes us good.”

“There’s always going to be people who are afraid and unaware and trying to hold on to what was before, but those people die off like dinosaurs,” he continued. “I think the goal is to pay them no mind, march forward and embrace the growth that makes us human.”

Alongside Tom Hanks (Woody the Cowboy), Allen voiced Andy’s space ranger toy from 1995 to 2019 in Pixar’s Toy Story franchise.

Marvel Cinematic Universe star Chris Evans is voicing the “real-life” version of Allen’s Buzz Lightyear in the spinoff, which is due to hit theaters on June 17, 2022.

The movie will follow the story of the “actual” — at least in the Toy Story universe (and maybe the Star Wars galaxy, for that matter) — astronaut who inspired Andy’s beloved space ranger in Toy Story (1995), Toy Story 2 (1999), Toy Story 3 (2010), and Toy Story 4 (2019).

The has already garnered its fair share of controversy — from Evans’s “Photoshopped” promo photos at Disneyland Resort’s Disney California Adventure Park to the first animated same-sex kiss in Disney history, Lightyear is set to make waves.

Now, Heaton has made her stance on Allen being axed clear on social media:

Saw the trailer for Buzz Lightyear and all I can say is Disney/Pixar made a HUGE mistake in not casting my pal Tim Allen in the role that he originated, the role that he owns. Tim IS Buzz! Why would they completely castrate this iconic, beloved character?

Heaton’s followers were divided, with some leaving comments like, “I was dying to bring my 6 year old this, as I LOVE Buzz Lightyear, but after learning @ofctimallen, THE STAR of the hit, isn’t it- I’m going to pass!”

Others, however, dissented, noting, “Why would Tim be in it? Different character. Second, your kid will know Chris Evans. Tim Allen? Not so much.”

Regardless of which side of the aisle you fall on in regard to the voice of Buzz Lightyear being changed, the film is slated to hit theaters nationwide in the U.S. on June 17, 2022.

Allen, for his part, is set to return to The Walt Disney Company in The Clauses, a Disney+ Original series based on The Santa Clause movie franchise.
