When Disney/Pixar made the recent announcement that a sequel to Monsters, Inc. was in development along with Brave (another new Pixar film), many fans wondered what happened to the project called Newt.
Yesterday, The Pixar Blog (unofficial) posted the sad news that Newt has been canned. They confirmed the film’s cancellation with Disney, though no further reason was given.
The film was to be about “what happens when the last remaining male and female blue-footed newts on the planet are forced together by science to save the species.” This is the first time Pixar has cancelled a publicly-announced feature-length film, so there is no precedent set for what happens to shelved ideas around the animation studio. Perhaps we’ll see Newt reemerge someday.
