Deadline was the first to report Marvel’s big Ironheart (2023) news; that RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Shea Couleé was cast in the highly anticipated Disney+ series.

Now, social media is reacting to the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with one Reddit thread already reaching 620 responses and counting.

“My two fave franchises colliding!” one Reddit user wrote. “Super happy for Shea!”

Countless replies commented on the value and importance of representation being that Couleé is a non-binary black actor who has more than earned their place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, like the following comment posted by user flirtyspy:

“This is absolutely AMAZING news!! Shea is such a talented performer and this level of representation is massive. Can’t wait to see who she will be playing and the life she brings to the show.”

Other commenters are speculating about Couleé’s level of involvement in the series, as it has yet to be announced and Marvel has yet to comment.

“Did some digging and I could see her playing the mutant Shade/Darkveil,” user Corn_Maestro wrote. “She’s a drag queen whose appearance was partially inspired by Shea.”

The poster is referring to Marvel’s first drag queen superhero, Shade, who made their debut in the comic Iceman back in 2018. Writer Sina Grace created the Iceman stories in an effort to diversify the comic world.

In an interview with The Advocate, Grace had the following to say about the project:

“I really wanted this series to push readers to new and better stories about the whole queer experience and how it applies to being both a mutant and a superhero. There’s a million different queer perspectives and we’re only scratching the surface.”

Be it this role or another, social media users appear to be responding positively overall to the prospect of a drag queen entering the MCU, made possible by Couleé’s historic casting.

Even those who haven’t been following Couleé’s journey are expressing anticipation for the collaboration.

“Man, I’ve never watched drag race, but the amount of excitement here has grabbed me,” one user wrote. “I’m looking forward to seeing her performance.”

Couleé herself shares their excitement, taking to Instagram to spread the word.

I’m trying to find the words to express the deep excitement I feel over this project. Acting was my first love long before Drag. So it only seems fitting to end my Drag Race journey and begin my acting career in the biggest way I could imagine. Stepping into the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been like stepping into OZ. ‘Ironheart’ is top to bottom going to be an absolutely STUNNING experience for the viewers, and I’m so humbled everyday that I get to work on set with some of the best and most dedicated artists in the industry. Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout my journey, and I look forward to sharing the exciting new chapter with you all 💖

Ironheart is set to stream on Disney+ in September of 2023 and follows Riri Williams, “a genius inventor who creates the most advanced suit of armor since Iron Man,” per Disney’s website.

Who do you think Shea Couleé will play in the upcoming Marvel series Ironheart?

Marvel Studios annihilated the DCEU at San Diego Comic-Con with stunning announcements and the emotional Black Panther: Wakanda Forever trailer. But the VFX artists who have been laboring behind the scenes for over a decade to bring the Marvel Universe to life have had enough. Now, Joe Pavlo, one of the artists who worked on Guardians of the Galaxy, has shared new details about what made working for Marvel and Disney unbearable.

VFX artists have been bashing Marvel for a few weeks now, and rumors of unionization are mounting. After Marvel fans trashed the quality of many of Marvel’s Phase Four projects like Moon Knight and particularly She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, which debuted a much smaller version of Tatiana Maslany’s Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk than anticipated.

The VFX industry is riddled with abuses like tight deadlines and crunch, where artists work incredibly long hours, sometimes 80–100-hour weeks, while being atrociously underpaid. Like all major Hollywood studios, Marvel and Disney outsource their visual effects to other companies and often underbid on effect house packages with the lowest cost possible.

But it is not just the crazy hours or the exploitive pay; artists also say that Marvel Studios and Disney have created a toxic work environment even if they are not onsite with the effect houses. Joe Pavlo recently revealed to The Guardian how studio demands affect the artists, saying:

“The visual effects industry is filled with terrific people with lots of goodwill who really care but, at the end of the day, there’s nothing in place when their backs are up against the wall and Disney is making crazy demands. All the goodwill in the world just evaporates when everything gets changed and they decide they’re replacing that character with a different actor or changing the entire environment – they’re now in a pizza restaurant instead of a cornfield. It can be that extreme at the very last minute.”

Marvel Studios is a big name in the movie industry, and no VFX company wants to get on its bad side. VFX workers constantly feel pressured to put out good work and develop amazing digital scenes in record time. And Pavlo says these conditions are boarding on abuse, adding:

“It can be characterized as bullying but filtered through multiple layers of management and supervisor and hierarchy. It’s not like the executive from Disney is grabbing someone and swearing at them or something like that. It’s more like an atmosphere where everybody feels like this is the most desperately important thing and, if we don’t do it, we’re all f*cked. The average artist doesn’t even have any contact with the clients. It’s really just the people at the producer and the supervisor level and then they pass it on to their crew. So you could say, oh, the supervisor’s a real bully, but actually it’s a knock-on effect and then the people who are the team leaders, once they can’t handle it, end up being bullies.”

From the outside, it may seem like Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige have it all planned out. Especially compared to Warner Brothers Discovery which has been shocking DCEU fans left and right with cancelations like Batgirl and rumors it could dissolve their Disney+ competitor HBO Max into Discovery+.

But it has reached the breaking point for the visual artists trying to keep up with the insane pace of Marvel’s projects between the new original shows for Disney+ and the condensed schedule of theatrical releases. Marvel Studios may have bitten off more than they can chew with their ambitious Phase Five and Six plans. Pavlo points out the way having so many projects going on at once affects VFX artists, saying:

“Disney-Marvel is very famous for wanting multiple versions running parallel so that they can decide what they want. (…) If you imagine you get the art department to design a set, you wouldn’t get them to tear down the set and rebuild a completely different set 35 times. Because it’s digital, people don’t see it as the same thing but it is: it involves work and creativity and long hours. It doesn’t create itself.”

With so many entries into the Marvel Multiverse being films simultaneously, it can lead to quick changes having to be made. There is so much content coming from Marvel and Star Wars that Disney+ is struggling to fit every show its own release date or risk cannibalizing views like what happened with Kenobi and Ms. Marvel.

And Pavlo is clearly far from an outlier. Other artists like Dhruv Govil, who worked in Guardians and Spider-Man: Homecoming, quit the entire industry after working on Marvel shows. He shared on Twitter that the cost-cutting had real effects on his coworkers and friends, saying:

“Working on #Marvel shows is what pushed me to leave the VFX industry. They’re a horrible client, and I’ve seen way too many colleagues break down after being overworked, while Marvel tightens the purse strings.”

Marvel Studios’ biggest faces have come out in support of the artists who make them look like Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. At the Television Association Summer Press Tour, She-Hulk star Tatiana Maslany voiced her opinion on the behind-the-scenes conditions of VFX workers, saying:

“We have to be conscious of how the work conditions are not always optimal. I feel incredibly deferential to how talented these artists are and how quickly they have to work. [It’s] much quicker than probably should be given to them, in terms of churning these things out.”

There would be no She-Hulk without VFX artists, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe is resting on their backs.

Let us know in the comments if you support these artists in unionizing.

You can stream Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Eternals, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and the seven series in Marvel’s Phase Four so far — Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany’s WandaVision, Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, Marvel’s What If…?, Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye, Oscar Isaac’s Moon Knight, Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel, and Tatiana Maslany’s She-Hulk  — on Disney+ anytime

Marvel Studios had a big weekend during San Diego Comic-Con in late July 2022.

During the event, Marvel president Kevin Feige took the Hall H stage to announce some major projects set to be released over the course of a couple of years as a part of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 5. He even teased the future of the Avengers, sharing that two new films are set to release in 2025 to end Phase 6.

Fans will notice that nowhere on that list is there a mention of a sequel to Chloé Zhao’s star-studded Eternals (2021), which teased its return in the end credits but has since not been mentioned by Marvel. That was until Patton Oswalt sat down for an interview with the TODAY Show.

In a TikTok shared by the show’s official account, Oswalt seemingly confirms Eternals 2 with Chloé Zhao returning as director.

“Harry Styles and I are in a little post-credit sequence in the Eternals. I play Pip the Troll and he plays Starfox, Thanos’ brother. They have announced there is going to be an Eternals sequel, Chloé Zhao is going to direct it. So hopefully there will be more adventures of Starfox and Pip.”

Fans were quick to notice the slip-up, as “protect Patton” videos began to circulate on social media. One TikToker quipped that Marvel president Feige was likely already tracking Oswalt down.

“So is anyone going to tell him? Patton, we all remember Comic-con day bro. Marvel made a ton of awesome announcements, but Eternals 2 with Chloé Zhao returning was not one of them. Guys, I think Feige is coming after him as we speak.”

While it hasn’t been officially confirmed by Marvel, an Eternals sequel seems imminent based on the end credits of the first film and based on some recent trademarks filed by Marvel for future projects.

This month, Marvel fans will finally meet Tatiana Maslany’s Jennifer Walters AKA She-Hulk, in the new series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law from creator Jessica Gao.

Hyped for a long time, the first look at Gao’s She-Hulk series debuted this year to mixed response, with some excited to welcome the longstanding Marvel Comics character into live-action and others questioning why the series even exists. And when August 18 (shifted from August 17) rolls around, the commentary is likely to continue and intensify over the Green Girl’s inaugural Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance.

Maslany will be joined by Mark Ruffalo, Tim Roth, and Benedict Wong, who reprise their roles as Dr. Bruce Banner/Hulk, Emil Blonsky/Abomination, and Sorcerer Supreme Wong, respectively.

Also starring in the upcoming MCU series will be Ginger Gonzaga (Nikki), Renée Elise Goldsberry (Amelia), and Jameela Jamil, who will star as Titania, the super-strong — and “annoying” — adversary of She-Hulk. Josh Segarra and Jon Bass also star in undisclosed roles.

When the first trailer for She-Hulk: Attorney at Law debuted, it drew immediate criticism for its CGI and VFX. While Maslany’s super-powered lawyer did gain backlash, it comes at a time when Marvel Studios are becoming increasingly criticized for their overall CGI output. Oscar Isaac’s Moon Knight raised eyebrows, as did both of the MCU’s latest feature films, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) and Thor: Love and Thunder (2022). The director of the latter, Taika Waiti, even drew a heated response himself when he jokingly commented on the VFX in his latest Thor effort.

As calls for VFX workers to unionize continue, it seems those involved with the next MCU Disney+ series, one which itself is drenched in CGI, have come to the support of disgruntled workers, possibly ruffling feathers of executives higher up at the Marvel studio.

Speaking to journalists at the Television Association Summer Press Tour, Maslany voiced her opinion on the behind-the-scenes conditions of VFX workers. Via Comic Book Movie:

“We have to be conscious of how the work conditions are not always optimal,” she started. “I feel incredibly deferential to how talented these artists are and how quickly they have to work. [It’s] much quicker than probably should be given to them, in terms of churning these things out.”

The actor would add that she’s “Pro-union,” words Marvel Studios would probably rather not hear.

Gao also voiced her support of those working on Marvel’s many complicated CGI-heavy projects, including her own. The television series creator said:

“I think everyone on this panel stands in solidarity with workers and is pro-workers. This is just a massive undertaking, to have a show of this scale, where the character is CG, it’s a very overwhelming and enormous thing to take on.”

“It’s terrible that a lot of artists feel rushed, and feel the workload is too massive.”

The Marvel call-outs are happening amid a time when employees are speaking out about working conditions under various different movie studios. Just recently, Warner Bros. shockingly axed Batgirl and Scoob!: Holiday Haunt, when both were near completion, and refused to release them either theatrically or via a streaming service such as HBO Max.

Those involved have spoken out about the news including Batgirl star, Leslie Grace — the In the Heights (2021) actress was set to appear alongside JK Simmons (Commissioner James Gordon), Michael Keaton (Bruce Wayne/Batman), and Brendan Fraser (Ted Carson/Firefly).

As more of those affiliated with a Marvel Studios project speak out, it may be time for the billion-dollar studio to reassess its turnaround time and the speed with which projects are put in front of audiences. But, looking ahead through Marvel Phase Four, Phase Five, and Phase Six, it seems there is no slowing down for the superhero franchise.

Marvel’s What If…? Season 1 was a standout series within the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase Four roster. At first, a companion to the ever sprawling live-action MCU, What If…? became more important as the weeks progressed, delivering characters and Multiversal storylines that would allude to things to come.

Now, as What If…? Season 2 gains steam, the Marvel Animation panel at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) revealed a sneak peek of the animated series to presentation guests only, and one actress was notably missing from their cartoon counterpart.

One of the more prominent actresses in the latter MCU movies, Thompson’s Valkyrie landed with a bang in the third Thor franchise outing, Thor: Ragnarok (2017) from director Taika Waititi. The colorful romp through Asgard, Midgard (Earth), and more realms saw Thor (Chris Hemsworth), team up with Dr. Bruce Banner/Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston), and Valkyrie to escape the Grandmaster’s (Jeff Goldblum) clutches and save their homeworld from Thor and Loki’s estranged sister, and fellow child of Odin (Anthony Hopkins), Hela, played by a mesmerizing Cate Blanchett.

Thompson’s elite, booze-swigging warrior returned this year in Waititi’s latest Thor effort, Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), alongside Hemsworth again, and Natalie Portman as Dr. Jane Foster/Mighty Thor. The King of New Asgard was once again swept up in a plot to kill all gods, orchestrated by Christian Bale’s Shakespearean take on Marvel Comics villain, Gorr the God Butcher.

But, it seems despite Thompson’s apparent tenure as King Valkyrie in Kevin Feige’s MCU, the actress will not be present for the next season of the animated series, What If…?.

Marvel’s What If…? debuted last August, and across nine episodes dissected the various facets of the Marvel Multiverse — long before Feige confirmed that Phases Four through Six were indeed labeled the Multiverse Saga — and showcased various characters in the anthology-style series.

As part of the MCU canon, many names returned to portray their animated incarnations; actors like Samuel L. Jackson, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Hayley Atwell returned to voice Nick Fury, Dr. Stephen Strange/Doctor Strange, and Agent Peggy Carter/Captain Carter, respectively. The latter, of course, foreshadowed Captain Carter’s live-action debut in Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) as part of Earth-838’s Illuminati.

However, in spite of the returning cast members, many names were absent, replaced by new voice actors for the series including Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Steve Rogers/Captain America, Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, and Drax the Destroyer, who were played by Hudson Thames, Josh Keaton, Lake Bell, and Fred Tatasciore, respectively.

While the process behind the casting is murky at best with creator AC Bradley, director Bryan Andrews, and producer Brad Winderbaum suggesting the idea of scheduling conflicts, live-action Drax actor, Dave Bautista, stated he was never asked to take part in the project.

And next up to be replaced will be Thompson’s Valkyrie. Per The Direct:

In the exclusive SDCC trailer of What If…?, more MCU characters were revealed.

Iron Man (Mick Wingert) can be seen racing on Sakaar alongside Gamora (Cynthia McWilliams), Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum), Taka Waititi’s Korg, and an unknown voice actress portraying Valkyrie.

There is also a shot of Hela in the trailer. A Variant of Steve Rogers’ Captain America was also seen fighting against Thanos set in Avengers: Infinity War.

Other characters that were featured in the trailer are Bucky Barnes, Wenwu, Ying Li, Odin, The Great Protector, and Ant-Man.

Marvel themselves teased the introduction of new characters also. The studio said:

Additional familiar but surprising characters for Season 2 include Yondu, Young Peter Parker, Ego, Shang-Chi, Valkyrie, Korg, Tony Stark, Wenwu, Odin, Red Guardian, and more.

Marvel’s What If…? Season 2 does not yet have a release date but fans can expect it to land sometime in early 2023. Which other live-action actors will lend their vocal talents to the project is unknown, as are the ones that will be replaced for the animation outing.

The series played on the classic Marvel Comics arc which asks what would occur if a superhero’s story happened differently. All under the watchful eye of Uatu, The Watcher, voiced by Jeffrey Wright, the nine-episode event concluded with a surprising crossover moment and the return of the villain, Ultron, played here by The Walking Dead‘s Ross Marquand. The series also included the voice of the late Chadwick Boseman in his final Marvel performance before passing away in 2020.

As the Multiverse Saga speeds up, and Marvel Phase Four closes in on its finale, What If…? could continue to play a pivotal role in the greater Avenger adventure.

For the most part, the MCU has every movie released in chronological order, but some of the MCU movies have broken the mold and are set in the past or later in the MCU. With Avengers: Endgame (2019) going five years into the future, fans have needed a timeline to know when a certain MCU project takes place.

Not all MCU projects are owned by Disney, making it hard to know when certain MCU projects occur. Spider-Man and the Hulk are owned by different companies meaning that Disney doesn’t get the streaming rights for those characters, making it harder for fans watching on Disney+ to know the correct timeline.

According to Reddit user u/Alegna94, Disney+ in Japan and Spain places The Incredible Hulk (2009) as the fifth MCU movie in the timeline. Despite being the second MCU movie released, both Iron Man movies are set before the events of Edward Norton’s Hulk alongside Chris Evan’s Captain America: The First Avenger (2009) and Captain Marvel (2018).

Black Panther 2 will continue to explore Wakanda’s involvement in the MCU, especially now that Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa is no longer a part of the MCU. Many actors and even Ryan Coogler have clarified that the sequel will be a tribute to Chadwick after his tragic passing.

T’Challa’s death in the MCU allows other characters like Leticia Wright’s Shuri to channel that grief into the story, which has been teased about being an emotionally charged movie. The lack of Chadwick’s presence is felt every day on the set, according to Lupita Nyong’0.

In a recent interview at San Diego Comic-Con, Wright opened up about how Shuri handles her grief and how that impacts her role in Wakanda Forever:

“That is the question of the hour. The first week was surreal. It was really surreal. We tried to get your game into the game, into the script, but you’re just also processing what just happened in the past eight/nine months, you know, and you’re trying to do therapy at the same time as [you] do [the] film. And the topic that you are discussing each day is real. They’re not fake. The first week it wasn’t easy, but we had each other and each day got better.”

Wright continues by explaining how Shuri’s technological advancement will lead to more cool weapons and equipment for the sequel:

“Shuri definitely is consumed with her work. The loss of her brother causes her to be so consumed with her work that she’s creating at another level, at a higher level actually. So there’s so much new technology to look forward to, and I think that’s where her sweet spot is at the moment. Like, ‘how do I process this?’ And she just throws all of her energy, even more so, into technology. So, there’s a lot of cool new things to look out for.”

While this is good to hear, some fans will wonder how other characters will be affected by T’Challa’s death. Black Panther 2 is set to focus on all of Wakanda, which means that the story will have a large story to tell, so it will be interesting to see how the movie not only uses T’Challa’s death as a way to move forward but also pay tribute to the actor who inspired so many people.

For months, rumors have claimed that Tenoch Huerta was playing Namor and that the anti-hero would serve as the antagonist for the movie. After seeing the teaser trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), fans can tell that Atlanteans and Wakandans will be going to war.

This isn’t new for Marvel, as Atlantis and Wakanda have always been rivals in the comics. Still, Black Panther and Namor did manage to have a good relationship since Namor values honor very highly. Rumors for Black Panther 2 indicate that Ironheart might cause the war between Wakanda and Atlantis, and since T’Challa isn’t there, war will break out.

In a recent interview at San Diego Comic-Con, Huerta confesses that he is happy that his character, Namor, has a “deep admiration” for T’Challa as the actor admits that he admires Boseman for all of his work:

“Well, my character, and personally, it is fun, because my character has a deep admiration for Black Panther… T’Challa… But, me as an actor and as a simple human being, what Chadwick means: so powerful, so deep, it’s extraordinary. And it’s… Yeah, it’s a big inspiration. So, in different levels, in the fiction and the real life, [to] be part of this and feel his presence… through the legacy, through the people who [were] involved in this project is fantastic. As I mentioned a moment before, it’s like his shadow is in the wall. So you line the shadow, and then you put a lot of colors, and music, and love, and you are part of that because it’s your colors as well. You know, your culture, your music is there, and it’s beautiful [to] be part of that, you know what I mean?”

This could mean that Huerta and T’Challa have met in the past, and the movie could have a flashback with Namor being saved by Black Panther or fighting alongside the character. Either way, having Namor know T’Challa and have a strong memory of the hero wouldn’t hurt Boseman’s legacy by having a stunt double stand-in as T’Challa.

This would help cement Namor’s relationship with T’Challa, but fans will have to see what Coogler has in store when the movie releases in November.
